How does Online Seminary and Institute work?

Online Seminary and Institute meets you where you are—literally! It connects you with a caring teacher you can really talk to. It connects you with diverse classmates you would never meet in person. And it offers the flexibility of online learning with the richness of live interactions.

Do you need more flexibility in your schedule for gospel learning?
Do you need an alternative to face-to-face classes because of transportation or safety?
Do you want time and space to engage thoughtfully with gospel questions?

Some people enroll in online learning so they can learn all by themselves and take as long as they want. But online students are most successful when they have a teacher, classmates, and deadlines.

Your Online Teacher

Every Online Seminary and Institute class has a teacher. Your teacher is there to encourage you in your gospel learning. You can ask your teacher gospel questions and get help to find answers. Your teacher can connect you to your classmates and help you deepen your personal conversion to Jesus Christ.

Class Gatherings

At least once a week your teacher will lead a class gathering. Your class gatherings will likely use video conference technology. They may even happen at times outside the normal school day. This is a great blessing for those who need some flexibility in their schedule.

Lessons and Activities

You will also complete lessons and activities in Canvas. Some of these will include posting comments in a class-wide online discussion. Other activities will be between you and your teacher only.

How do I prepare?

Online Learning

Make sure you have regular internet access, especially for your gatherings.
Use an internet-connected device with a webcam and microphone (or headset).
Commit to being outgoing and respectful in your online interactions.
Keep a positive attitude about your education and experiences!

Class Gatherings

Find a place that's clean, quiet, and well-lit.
Make sure you are comfortable but not sleepy.
Dress appropriately and keep your camera on.
Stay muted until you speak, but don’t be shy!

Lessons and Activities

Start your studies with prayer and maybe even some gospel music!
Listen to and learn from your classmates in online discussions.
Set a regular schedule for completing your coursework.
Train yourself to stay on schedule and catch up if you fall behind.
